Motorists killed one person walking and inflicted life-changing injuries on another last week, according to the Denver Police Department. A driver also seriously injured one person biking.

A man, who has yet to be publicly identified, was crossing the street near Alameda Avenue and Pecos Street at about 9 p.m. Wednesday when a driver struck and killed him. We’ll let you know more when we do.

A motorcyclist injured the other pedestrian victim, who was walking near Sheridan Boulevard and 8th Avenue. A driver seriously injured the bicycling victim near 36th Avenue and Lawrence Street.

Two people on motorcycles were also seriously injured between August 6 and August 12, while no one in a car was hurt or killed, according to police reports.

In all, Denver PD responded to 479 crashes. Officers arrested 30 people for driving drunk or high.

With this series, we aim to remind politicians, transportation officials, local media, and the public that the cost of inaction on traffic safety policies is extremely high. The longer it takes to redesign our car-centric streets, the more people will get hurt or killed.

The Hancock administration and Denver PD still lack a protocol for alerting the public to serious traffic collisions and tallying them accurately, despite the mayor’s ostensible commitment ending traffic deaths, announced more than two years ago. Hopefully documenting this information, gathered from Denver PD reports, will help drive change from decision-makers and elevate the profile of this public health crisis.
