Hundreds of people on bikes gathered near the ballpark last night before riding in the rain to a candlelight vigil held where a driver hit and killed a bicyclist last week. The second cyclist death in as many weeks, the action was part memorial, part protest and also part of an annual celebration when bicyclists put on dresses and ride through the city.

A woman riding in a bike lane near Washington Park died yesterday after a driver crashed his work vehicle into her. A group of neighbors are fighting to stop upgrades to a bike lane on the street — and even advocates agree that white plastic posts are not the answer.

A cyclist was hit and killed by a reckless driver at one of Denver's many unsafe intersections, the first person on a bike killed so far this year. Scott Hendrickson, who was 62, was an energetic and well-liked member of the local bicycle community.

This year, drivers have already killed 26 people, far outnumbering the 15 traffic fatalities at this point last year.

Today students at the University of Denver attempted driving a tricycle around traffic cones while texting. Distractions were added to other games, like corn hole, putt putt and perfection, as a part of the “Distraction Games,” an event state transportation officials organized in hopes of raising awareness of the dangers of distracted driving.

Denver will build 16.8 miles of new bike lanes this summer, kicking off the construction of 125 miles of bikeways the city will add to its network over the next five years. This summer’s work includes nine projects, most in lower-income areas outside of the city center. As the city finally accelerates the expansion of its bike network, advocates expressed support.
