We called the Danish embassy in Washington, D.C. to get more information on whether Denmark considers parking-protected bike lanes a best practice and the woman who answered the phone laughed at us.

Marion Parkway Bike Lane Critics Walk out as City Presents Design

The city presented a new design for a protected bike lane that prompted a group of opponents to storm out of the meeting in a huff without even commenting on the proposal for South Marion Street Parkway.

According to the City of Memphis, this street is too narrow to accomodate bike lanes. That, in a nutshell, is why there is only ONE bike lane in the entire city. (This street is, however, signed as a part of two official bike routes.)

The Department of Public works installed rubber curbs and plastic posts to create “corner wedges” within five intersections on the 15th Street bikeway downtown earlier this month. The pilot project aims to slow drivers as they turn left at intersections, helping to ensure they yield to bicyclists and pedestrians.
